Instructing Us

The instruction of barristers is arranged through Chambers’ clerking team, who may be contacted on 020 7242 5524 or at clerks@4stonebuildings.com.

Led by David Goddard, the clerks at 4 Stone Buildings are committed to providing an outstanding level of service and can assist with any potential instructions or enquiries. Their in-depth knowledge can help guide and advise clients on suitability, availability, fees and general process.

Members of Chambers are able to accept instructions from any of the following:

  • Solicitors, other authorised litigators, employed barristers, and legal advice centres in England & Wales.
  • European lawyers registered with The Law Society, and qualified lawyers from other jurisdictions.
  • Licensed professionals in the UK under the Licensed Access scheme.

Some members of 4 Stone Buildings are also qualified to accept instructions under the public access scheme which allows clients to use the service of a barrister without instructing a solicitor. The clerks are trained in managing public access matters and are happy to answer any questions you may have. More information can be found from the BSB’s guidance for lay clients.

Pricing

Upon receipt of instructions, the clerks would be pleased to provide an estimate of fees, or to discuss with you the basis on which fees will be charged.

Unless otherwise agreed, all drafting and advisory work is charged on an hourly basis, while brief fees and refreshers are to be agreed in advance of any court appearances and other hearings (including mediations and arbitrations). Pricing may vary according to the seniority of the barrister, the amount of time required, and the urgency of the work required. Please note that all professional fees are plus VAT, unless zero rated.

Fees for public access work are agreed on a case by case basis in advance of work taking place.

Timescales

Timescales for work to be completed can be agreed in advance or at the time of instruction. The agreed timescale will be subject to the barrister’s commitments, the volume of work involved and the potential need to obtain further instructions, papers or information. Please note that timescales for a case may vary depending on the other side’s approach and court waiting times.
