The High Court on Friday 4 April 2025 gave a declaration of insolvency sought urgently in respect of the energy company Rebel Energy, which serviced approximately 90,000 domestic customers and has been the subject of national media coverage in recent days.
The declaration – which was made by reference to section 123 of the Insolvency Act 1986 – enables the regulator OFGEM to take steps to revoke the company’s energy supply licences and manage its energy customers going forward.
The claim was filed on Thursday 3 April and heard by Mr Justice Marcus Smith. Zara McGlone appeared for the successful Claimant, the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority acting through OFGEM.
