Secretary of State for Health and Social Care v PPE Medpro featured in the Lawyers Top 20 cases of 2025

January 7, 2025

The Lawyer recently published its list of the ‘Top 20 Cases of 2025’, which this year features Secretary of State for Health and Social Care v PPE Medpro. For the claimant, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Essex Court’s Paul Stanley KC and 4 Stone Buildings’ Tiran Nersessian, Albert Sampson and Nicholas Wright, instructed by the Government Legal Department’s James Turnill, Kieran Brierley, Rachel Cook, Nicholas Cottrell, Jonathan Lee and Hannah Bowry Williams.

This case will likely dominate the front pages in June with the Government seeking more than £100m from defendant PPE Medpro. At issue is whether the personal protective equipment (PPE) supplied by PPE Medpro, namely 25 million sterile surgical gowns, were sterile and whether they complied with the requirements of the contract at the time of the national emergency. The Government argues that the PPE was faulty and did not meet the required standards.
